Sean's On The Web Progress

The blog that is keeping track of my progress on my project for module MC15020.
The module's mission is to learn how to keep a well written and edited blog.
After a false start, I have decided my project will be documenting my experiences as I attempt to write a 50,000 word novel for NaNoWriMo

Started

The writing blog has been created and I'm currently writing my first post.

Time to clarify a few things for my own personal reference, and that of the examiners.

I have made sure that my written work is released under full copyright license, as can be seen by the side bar of the blog. My photography will be released under a CC license as I don't mind people using that.

Photographically-wise I use a Canon Powershot A700, along with InfranView to resize the pictures. Pictures are hosted on my university webspace, as be will any other material.

All my work is written on my laptop and periodically backed up to my desktop and the university drives.

I am kept sane by my desktop as it has my music collection on it, along with a good set of speakers.

I think this is it for technological information at present, but I'm sure I'll think of more.

Change of Direction

Recently, I have been sitting down to do this project and coming up with a huge blank.

So I have decided to take action and change the project. If I can't get inspired around it, I'll choose something I am inspired by. Instead, I will be documenting my thought processes (and state of my desk and life) as I attempt to write a 50k word novel for NaNoWriMo.

This blog will still be tracking the status of the project and any technical occurrences, whereas the actual blog will be focusing on my thoughts and feelings.

A new mission statement will have to be written up, and that will be done shortly.

Slow

Progress on the blogs has been a little slow. My other assignments are currently taking up much of my time. However, I have begun to form a more solid idea of the way the story will go.

Keep checking back for updates, there will be some!

Fixed

All working now. Excellent.

EDIT: For those interested in seeing what the pages look like, go here.

Mistake

Ok, I made a mistake, I didn't need to get my webspace enabled. That's only if I'm using .php files.

Which I only was because I was reusing old files (mainly CSS, but I duplicated an old php file so I didn't have to remember all the division classes) of mine to give it somewhat of an interface. I stripped all the php code out, but forgot to change the extension.

So I've sorted that, except in the process I deleted the wrong file and am left with my test file full of gibberish content, at least it looks kinda good. Time to boot up the laptop (where all my project files are stored) and put the right file on there so I can actually fulfill that part of the criteria

*Sigh* This part's the easy bit.

Webspace

I've updated my aber webspace to link here properly. However, apparently you need to be on the list of enabled users.

Doh.

So I've sent off a happy little email asking to enable me. Guess we'll see how long that takes.

Profiles

Each of the individual profiles has been written. I'm getting a beginning feel for the characters and what they're going to be.

Tom's going to be a 'lads lad', Marv's going to be a studyholic recluse, Kim's definately going to be anime fangirl (stereotype? You betcha, but I have enough friends like her to be able to write her.), and finally, Jane. Jane's going to be probably the most like me (except in subject that she's studying), so I'll probably find her the easiest to write.

Another thing I've recently realised I have to look at is grammar and spelling, do I want to add to the immersion by purposefully using things like 'm8' and 'l8r' and 'u', or do I want to try and spell as best as possible to make it easier to read?

I've also got to work out their writing styles as well. So far I've got Marvin writing short sentences with lots of full stops, and Kim being extra excitable and writing with loads of !'s. Jane will end up writing like me I'm sure, and Tom... haven't got a feel for him yet.

Also about to update this blog's description.

Setup

Alright, the basic setup for the blogs that I will be using for my project has been completed. 4 seperate accounts have been created, as have the blogs, and the beginnings of the individual identities.

I checked through the T&Cs of Blogger, and there was nothing against creating more than one account, so that's been done fine. All registered under the same email address, so I'm not being sneaky about it.

I'm thinking of also starting a blog that all the posts made will mirror to, so as to keep the whole story in one place and allowing for those who don't want to read individual blogs.

Links to the individual blogs will be on the right in about 2 minutes.
